Though the days may be still be warm, your lawn, trees and shrubs are sensing the change in the seasons and do not require as much water as they did just a month ago. The evenings are cooler and the days are getting shorter as we move towards winter. In fact, this time of year we recommend that you turn off your irrigation entirely and only water as needed. Reducing your irrigation schedule now will save you money on your water bill all winter long.

The phrase “First Flush" is used to describe the runoff that occurs at the beginning of each rainy season. The first flush carries with it concentrations of pollutants that have accumulated during the period of dry weather between storms, which in our case, has been many months.  The following are actions you can take to help control storm water pollution:

• Take used motor oil and other automotive fluids to a recycling facility. For a list of facilities, visit:

• Don't litter.  Cigarette butts and other trash are washed into our storm drains, and end up in our bay and on beaches.
• Keep the area in front of your home clean – pick up and dispose of trash and debris in the gutter.
• Don't sweep or blow yard waste into streets and gutters.
• Don't use excess pesticides and fertilizer, and do not apply to your lawn before it rains. These chemicals should not be used near gutters and streets.
• Don't overwater lawns.  In addition to wasting scarce water supplies, runoff carries contaminants and washes waste into our storm drains.
• Don't wash cars in driveways or in the street.  Detergents, oils and grease are washed into the storm drains and carried into our waters.  Commercial car washes are required to remove these pollutants.
• Pick up pet waste and dispose of in trash.
• Use green waste container for grass and yard clippings.
• Safely dispose of unwanted cleaners, paint and chemicals. 

LOCSD is also continuing with their monthly Board, Utilities Advisory Committee, Finance Advisory Committee and Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Meetings.
